A shorthand term for the close relationship between the Christian Church and the power of the state in Europe – developing after 312 CE when the Emperor Constantine set a precedent for state patronage of Christianity. It can also be used to refer to the historical period when this relationship persisted – ending, arguably, in CE 1918.
