The Vatican ‘Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’ – from 1965 to 2022 the name for what then became the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF). Its function was originally to monitor clerical theologians for ‘right teaching’ or orthodoxy. It dates from the Middle Ages – when it was known as the Roman Inquisition. Later it became the ‘Holy Office’. As the CDF it was especially controversial for its practice of censoring theologians without an opportunity for a hearing – often on the basis of anonymous complaints. It also took over in 2001 the adjudication of reported allegations of clerical sexual abuse internationally.
